The Environment
To any business or organisation, when considering a new strategy that will bring with it change, there has to be analysis of the environment. This is an area that is very wide ranging and encompasses both the internal and external environments. Since a strategy is generally a long term decision that has to be monitored and altered once implemented, the environment has to be studied with the long term in mind. Many environmental factors can be unstable as they are affected by decisions made beyond any of the organisations control. This includes aspects of the external environment such as the political and economic factors.
In an organisation the internal environment needs to be understood to ensure that the correct strategy can be implemented that will fit in with the existing organisational structure, finances and culture.
Alternatively if a strategy is to be implemented that will go against the existing internal environment, then change management has to be introduced to make sure implementation is smooth. The main part of the environment that managers do not investigate, to enable them to have a fuller understanding of the business and direction that it can go in, is the company’s strength’s, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
